TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA
Wireless Master Plan May 2018
Geographic Area 8.3 square miles
Duration 2015 – Present
The Challenge
The Town embarked on the Wireless Communications Initiative in the spring of 2017. The Town’s wireless communications network and the underlying regulations needed to be updated to better serve the community. This coincided to the wireless communications industry expanding the scope and capacity of their communications networks. The purpose of the Chapel Hill Wireless Communications Initiative intended to address these conditions by developing a framework for efficient deployment to support the Town’s day-to-day domestic, commercial, and institutional wireless activities.
Our Solution
CityScape began the master planning process as a solution to the Town’s Wireless Communications Initiative. The public process engaged the community in obtaining feedback as it related to the placement and aesthetic preferences of wireless infrastructure. The Plan assessed the limitations of the existing wireless facilities, developed a plan for future deployment and estimated the number of new facilities needed over the next ten years.
Key Outcomes
- Extensive stakeholder input throughout public open house meetings, Council work sessions, public polling, Joint Advisory Board work sessions and Council meetings.
- Updated existing inventory and provided a comprehensive wireless infrastructure catalog.
- Provided training and relevant material for staff, decision-makers and the public in an effort to streamline and enhance the evaluation of new wireless infrastructure applications.
- Identified Town-owned properties that could potentially be part of the network deployment solution for the community and the wireless industry.
